Koa and Maple Bed

When I finished my assignment in the Philippines in 1978, Jackie and I spent a few days in Hawaii on our return to the states.  While in Hawaii we saw some locally built furniture made from koa wood.  We both admired the koa's beautiful color and grain pattern.  In 1980, I bought 750 board feet of koa and promised Jackie I'd build her a koa bedroom set.  I've still got the koa and Jackie's still waiting for her bedroom furniture. 

Well, it's 2006 and I've finally got the bed built.  I did not want a bed with four posts in the corners, so I came up with this curving platform design.  The side rails are tenoned into a maple block dovetailed into the koa ends.  I'm going to let Jackie suggest ideas for the headboard.
